The bells are back … but not yet ready to ring …

The work to restore the bells at St Uny Church to the Tower has been more difficult than expected … mostly due to the hardness of Cornish granite! Putting in the new supports and cross-beams has proved to be hard work.

These last two weeks have seen much progress, the bells are now all in the tower, and most are hung and ready to ring once the ropes have been fitted.

The slightly sad reflection on this otherwise excellent news is that for our Feast Day there were hand bells rung by members of the ringing team, as they did at Christmas. It’s a lovely sound, accompanied by the smiles of the ringers in the church porch, so it’s by no means second best!

The service of rededication is on Sunday 24th March, Bishop Philip of Truro presiding. Donna Birrell of BBC Radio Cornwall has been invited, and hopes to record the refurbished bells for the regular Bells on Sunday slot on her Sunday morning programme. The service will be attended by the Mayor of St Ives, and by Lady St Levan representing the Queen; pupils of St Uny C of E Academy, Carbis Bay, will also be participating.
